Here’s a date that’s inexpensive, takes twenty minutes to set up, and somehow turns into a forty-minute discussion about whether caramel apple cider beats salted caramel cocoa.
Four mugs. Four fall drinks. Numbered, tasted blind, and scored. That’s one cozy fall date night.
You’ve heard of wine and beer flights, so why not a cider or cocoa flight?
Flights are fun because tasting things side by side is completely different from tasting them one at a time. You notice things, you can compare more effectively, and you get weirdly competitive about defending the one you picked as your favorite.

Why a Flight Beats Just Making Two Mugs
You could warm up nice, hot drinks and sit on the couch to talk. That’s lovely. But it’s passive, and fifteen minutes in you’re both on your phones.
A flight gives you a job. There’s a thing to do, opinions to defend, and a winner at the end. It’s the same reason a chocolate tasting date works better than just eating chocolate.
It also scales down beautifully. No babysitter, no reservation, no leaving the house on a cold night.
What You Need
- Free date night invite — see below
- Four mugs — they don’t have to match

- A scorecard — free printable download below
- Optional: a blindfold — or just have the other person close their eyes
Inviting your spouse
First, use the free date night invitation below to invite your spouse on this cozy fall date.
You can download and print it OR just text the image to them after you fill in the details.

Sure, you could text, “Hey, want to make some fall drinks tonight?”
But where’s the fun in that? 😉
There’s something about getting an actual invitation that makes a date feel more like… well, a DATE.
It tells your spouse, I’m not just looking for something to do tonight. I want to take YOU on a date.
There’s a big difference between making plans together and feeling like your spouse is actually pursuing and romancing you.
And the best part? It takes almost no effort at all.
Picking Your Four Drinks
Contrast is what makes a flight fun. The bigger the gap between mug one and mug four, the more there is to debate.
A good fall spread:
- Something apple — mulled cider, caramel apple cider, or plain cider warmed with a cinnamon stick
- Something chocolate — classic cocoa, Mexican hot chocolate, or salted caramel
- Something spiced — chai, wassail, pumpkin spice, or a London fog
- A dark horse — whatever looked interesting on your fall Pinterest board or in the grocery aisle
Store-bought packets absolutely count. Nobody is grading you on authenticity, and half the fun is discovering that a $1.29 packet beat the one you simmered for an hour.
If you’d rather make them from scratch, we’ve got 50 fall warm drink recipes — ciders, cocoas, wassails, and caramel everything. Pick any four and you’re set.
How to Run the Tasting
There are two ways to do this, and they’re both good.
The Easy Version
One of you plays bartender. Make all four, number the mugs 1 through 4, and keep the key hidden. The other person tastes and scores without knowing what’s what. Then swap roles next time.
The Better Version
You each secretly pick and make two drinks. Neither of you knows what the other chose. Number all four, taste blind together, score independently, then reveal.
This version is fun because you’re both surprised, and there’s an element of competition in who made the best drink.
The Scorecard
Download and print 2 copies of the free scorecard below. Then, individually score each category 1 to 5.

Highest total wins. If you tie, debate it — that’s part of the date.
Our favorite prompt on the scorecard is: “What this reminds me of.” That’s the one that turns a tasting into an actual conversation. Somebody always ends up talking about memories in their grandmother’s kitchen.
Five Ways to Change It Up
- Cocoa versus cider, head to head. Two of each, and settle the household debate once and for all.
- All one family. Once you’ve done a mixed flight, try four ciders or four cocoas and see how much you can taste between the variations. Harder than it sounds, and a good excuse to run this twice in a season.
- The add-in bar. Make one base drink, then set out whipped cream, cinnamon, caramel sauce, orange peel, nutmeg, a candy cane, and a shake of cayenne. You each doctor two mugs and try to out-invent each other.
- The sabotage round. Each of you secretly adds one weird ingredient to one mug. Salt. Hot sauce. A splash of pickle juice. You have to guess which mug was sabotaged and with what before scoring. This one can get crazy.
- Make it a group date. Ask two other couples to each bring a thermos of their favorite. Suddenly you’ve got six drinks and a proper competition. Works well alongside Choctoberfest if you want to go all in on a fall tasting night.
While You’re Sipping
Four drinks take a while, which is the point. A few things worth asking between mugs:
- What did fall smell like at your house growing up?
- What’s a tradition you had as a kid that we’ve never done together?
- If we could only do one fall thing this year, what should it be?
- What’s something you’re looking forward to before the holidays hit?
That third question has a way of turning into actual plans, which is how our best October weekends have started.
Then Put It on the Calendar
The whole date takes about forty-five minutes and leaves you with a winner to defend for the rest of the season. Do it again in December with peppermint and eggnog in the mix.
