Date night is one of the best things you can do for your marriage — but between the cost of a sitter, packed schedules, and plain old exhaustion, actually getting out for one isn’t always realistic. The good news? Some of the most memorable date nights happen right at home. We’ve kept a weekly date night going for years, even with little kids and no babysitter in sight, by getting creative and dating in our own living room. The secret is that an at-home date takes a tiny bit of intention so it doesn’t blur into just another night on the couch. Here are five simple tips to make your at-home date nights a genuine success.

1. Plan Ahead
The single biggest difference between a real at-home date and another ordinary evening is planning. Decide what you’re doing before the day arrives, so you’re not standing in the kitchen at 8 p.m. wondering what to do. Pick the activity, figure out what you’ll need, and give yourselves something to look forward to. A little forethought pulls you out of the normal routine and turns an average night into an event.
2. Let Go and Get Creative
Being home doesn’t mean the night has to be ordinary. Pretend you’re out on the town: set the table, dim the lights, put on real clothes (not the ones you cleaned the house in), and make dinner feel like a restaurant with candles and your favorite playlist. The more you treat it like a special night out, the more it actually feels like one — without the price tag.
3. Set a Date and Time — and Commit to It
It sounds obvious, but the at-home date is the easiest one in the world to postpone “just this once.” Put it on the calendar with an actual start time and protect it the way you would a reservation you’d already paid for. Building a standing weekly date night is one of the best habits a couple can have — it’s a big part of why we believe you should never stop dating your spouse, even years into marriage.
4. Get Everything Ready in Advance
Planning what you’ll do isn’t quite enough — set the scene before your start time so nothing eats into your evening together. Lay out supplies, prep the food, and cue up the music ahead of time. If you have kids, have a clear plan for them, too: decide what they’ll do or watch while you’re on your date, and set out everything they’ll need for bed — pajamas, toothbrushes, a glass of water — so the hand-off to bedtime is quick and you’re back to your date in no time.
5. Cut Out the Distractions
Home is full of things competing for your attention. Put your phones in another room, turn off the TV (unless it’s actually part of the date), and give yourself permission to ignore the dishes and the laundry — they’ll still be there tomorrow. Be fully present with your spouse. In the end, it’s presence, not a spotless house, that makes the night count.
Even 30 Minutes Counts
If these five steps become second nature, there’s really no excuse to skip date night — even on your busiest weeks. Short on time? A date can absolutely happen in 30 minutes. We’ve had plenty of half-hour dates when nothing else was possible, and those little pockets of focused, tuned-in time still did their job. Even at home, even for 30 minutes, date night can be a huge success.

At-Home Date Night FAQs
Plan the date ahead of time, set a specific day and start time, and get everything ready before you begin so nothing eats into your evening. Then set the mood, put the phones away, and focus fully on each other.
Plenty! Do the date after the kids are in bed, or set them up with a movie and activities while you enjoy a candlelit dinner, a game, or a project together. An at-home date means you never need a sitter to connect.
Treat it like a night out: dress up a little, dim the lights, set the table, make a nice meal or dessert, and add music. Small touches signal that this is a real date, not just another evening at home.
Aim for a regular weekly date night if you can. Consistency matters more than cost or length — even a focused 30 minutes together each week keeps you connected and the romance alive.
