How to Play Strip Poker: Rules for Couples
Strip poker may be the only game of poker where both players win! 😉 If you’re new to playing strip poker, never fear! Below is everything you need to know to play strip poker and, more specifically, how to make it a successful date night with your sweetheart!
The Dating Divas have created an instruction sheet and a scoring cheat sheet for your next Strip Poker Date Night! Get ready to gamble just a bit AND have some fun!
How to play strip poker: deal each player two cards, play a simple poker format like Texas Hold’em, and each round the losing hand removes one item of clothing. Agree on your rules first (does jewelry count?), set a romantic mood, and keep playing as many rounds as you like. Free printable rules, chips, and a poker-hand cheat sheet are below.
Strip Poker Rules: A Step-by-Step Guide
Strip poker is the classic card game with one flirty twist: instead of betting chips, you bet layers of clothing. It plays exactly like regular poker — the player with the weakest hand each round loses an article of clothing — which makes it one of the easiest, most playful ways to heat up a date night at home. Here’s how to play strip poker from start to finish.
What you’ll need: a standard 52-card deck, a private space, and — the fun part — both of you wearing a few layers to start. Socks, jewelry, and accessories all count.
- Set your ground rules first. Before the first card is dealt, agree on what counts as one “item” (are socks a pair or two separate items?), how far you both want the game to go, and an easy, no-questions-asked way to pause. Comfort and consent are what keep it fun.
- Even out your layers. Both players should start with roughly the same number of items so the game stays fair. Count them up and add or remove an accessory or two to match.
- Deal the hole cards. We use Texas Hold’em throughout this post — it is the format on our printable instruction sheet, and it is easy to pick up in a single hand. Shuffle the deck and deal two cards face down to each player. Those two are yours alone.
- Turn over the community cards. The dealer lays three shared cards face up in the middle (the flop), then a fourth (the turn), then a fifth (the river). Place a bet with your chips between each stage — or just check and keep going if you would rather skip the betting.
- Compare your hands. Reveal your hole cards. Each of you makes the best five-card hand you can from any combination of your two cards and the five shared ones. Standard poker rankings apply — from a single high card at the bottom up to a royal flush at the top. Keep the poker hand cheat sheet further down this page handy if either of you is rusty.
- The lower hand removes one item. Whoever holds the weaker hand takes off a single article of clothing.
- Reshuffle and keep playing. Deal a fresh hand and repeat. Play continues round after round as the layers come off.
- Decide how it ends. Most couples play until one person is down to their last item — or until you’ve both happily decided to stop keeping score. There are no real losers in strip poker.
Poker hand rankings, weakest to strongest: high card, one pair, two pair, three of a kind, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush, royal flush.
Strip Poker Rules for 2 Players (The Couples Version)
Strip poker is actually at its best with just two people. With only the two of you, play it “heads-up”: deal two cards to each of you, turn over the five community cards in the usual three stages, and compare your best five-card hands. The lower hand loses a layer. Because there’s no third player, every single hand has a winner and a loser, so the game moves fast and the tension builds quickly.
Want to make it last longer? Add a “best of three” rule — the loser only removes an item after losing three hands — so the anticipation stretches across the whole night instead of ending in a few quick rounds.
Sexy & Party Variations to Try
Once you’ve got the basic rules down, mix in one of these to match your mood:
- The date-night version (for couples): Each time you lose a hand, the winner chooses — you either remove an item or complete a flirty dare. It keeps things playful even when the cards aren’t falling your way.
- The party version (3+ players): Perfect for a couples’ game night. Play a normal hand and the lowest hand at the table loses a layer each round. Set clear boundaries up front so everyone stays comfortable.
- No poker face required: Not confident in your poker skills? Swap full hands for a simple high-card draw — each person flips one card, and the low card loses a layer. All of the fun, none of the strategy.
- Truth-or-dare hybrid: Losing a hand means removing an item or answering a spicy question. A great way to learn something new about each other.
- Five-card draw (no community cards): Prefer to skip the shared cards? Deal five cards to each player, let each of you swap up to three once, then compare hands. Same stakes, fewer moving parts.
How to Initiate a Strip Poker Date Night
Get your spouse excited by inviting them to meet you for a little private playtime! Below you’ll find a printable invitation inviting them to a night of sexy fun playing Strip Poker.
You can print and fill it out, or you can screenshot it, fill in the info, and shoot it off in a text. You can even attach the instruction sheet to the invite so they can brush up on the rules, too!
After you get a positive confirmation (and of course you will!) that they are game to play, get going on your prep work! Luckily it is SUPER easy! Get yourself a 2″ circle punch and simply punch-punch-punch those strip poker chips out (linked up below)!

The chips will be used for extra point collateral in a strip poker game. Of course, losing a game of strip poker also means WINNING since someone is going to be naked… *Wink!* But you can use the chips to see who gets to make the decisions for the night. For instance, the person with the most chips could choose the position, location, foreplay, and whatever else you think will make this night even more special!
If you are not comfortable utilizing the chips, no worries! You can simply use your clothing as your bargaining chips.
Tips for a Successful Strip Poker Date Night
The night of your strip poker date, make sure that you are both comfortable and ready for a good time. Here are a few tips to ensure that it will go off without a hitch!
- Set a romantic mood with low lights
- Break out some of your favorite sweet treats
- Play some of your favorite mood music
- Freshen up before you begin to play. Who knows how steamy things will get?! 😉
That being said, remember that you are playing strip poker with your spouse, so there’s nothing to be nervous about!
How to Play Strip Poker
- Your goal when playing strip poker is to keep as many of your clothes on while getting your opponent to lose theirs. However, we’re willing to bet that your clothes will come off even if you win. 😉
- One important tip we recommend when teaching how to play strip poker is to set your rules beforehand. For instance, does jewelry count as an item of clothing? That’s up to you! You can also decide if you want to bet your own piece of clothing, or let your spouse choose what you lose!
- As for how to actually play the game of poker, we had to have some lessons from our husbands (and YouTube!) to teach us how to play. With the help of the amazing Joanna of Cutify Creative, we combined my strip poker knowledge and her incredible design skills into a little instruction sheet for you linked below! {Did you know that you could make poker this cute?! How does she do it?! Check her out!}
- Enjoy playing Texas Hold ‘Em and aim to keep YOUR clothes on but get your sweetie’s clothes OFF!

How to Play Texas Hold ‘em
This is a simple form of poker that you will both be pros at in no time! There are a lot of different types of poker; this is just the one we learned — and it’s perfect for strip poker. - Shuffle the deck and deal 2 cards, face down, to each player.
- Check your cards and place your bet using the chips.
- The dealer lays 3 cards face up in between the two players (these are cards that you can “use” to finish your hand).
- Check your hand out compared to the cheatsheet and bet again.
- The dealer deals 1 more card face up.
- Check your cards and bet again.
- The dealer deals a 5th card face up.
- Now you can see all the possibilities and have the chance to bet again before revealing your hand.
- Reveal your hands and determine the winner!
- Whoever loses that round loses an article of clothing. Play as many rounds as you want!

Strip Poker: Frequently Asked Questions
Strip poker is a card game that follows the normal rules of poker, with one flirty twist: instead of betting money or chips, players bet articles of clothing. Whoever loses a hand takes off one item. It is a popular at-home date night game for couples because it is easy to learn and needs nothing more than a deck of cards.
Each round plays out like a normal hand of poker. Cards are dealt, both players compare their best five-card hands, and the strongest hand wins the round. The player with the losing hand then removes one article of clothing. You agree before you start on what counts as an item and how far the game goes, then keep dealing fresh hands for as long as you like.
Deal each player two cards and play a simple poker format like Texas Hold’em. After each round, whoever loses removes one item of clothing. Agree on your rules first, such as whether jewelry counts, and keep playing rounds until you are ready to stop.
For two players, use Texas Hold’em: each person gets two cards, five community cards are dealt face up in stages with betting in between, and the best five-card hand wins. The loser of each hand removes an article of clothing.
Set your rules before you start: decide what counts as an item of clothing, whether to bet clothing directly or use chips, and how many rounds to play. Beyond that it follows normal poker rules, with the losing hand removing one item each round.
All you need is a deck of cards and each other. Our free printable adds an invitation, chips, a rules sheet, and a poker-hand cheat sheet to make it easy, but they are optional.
Set a romantic mood with low lighting and music, add some treats, and use chips as extra collateral so the winner picks the position, location, or foreplay. Keep it playful and remember there are no real losers.

What are the chips and betting for if the losing hand removes one article of clothing? It seems like the chips and betting are an unnecessary step.
Totally optional – I think we used them to see who the ultimate winner was and there was an extra “prize” like a “your choice” (back rub, foot rub, position…)
I can’t wait to do this one!! So fun!!!! xoxo
