Searching the Hallmark aisle for the perfect card to show you care? What better way to say “I love you” than a unique, personalized card made by you? The best part of this step card is that it gives you page after page to share all the different reasons you love your spouse — and it’s genuinely easy to make. Here’s the full step card tutorial from start to finish.

What You’ll Need
- 4 sheets of 8.5 x 11 colored paper
- 1 ribbon, about 30 inches long
- A hole punch
- A list of favorite traits or reasons you love your spouse (print your own or handwrite them — see below)

How to Make a Step Card

Step 1: Take the four 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper and lay them out so each sheet sits 1 inch above the next. You now have your first four layers.
Step 2: Arrange the papers in the order you want them displayed. Hint: if the backs of your papers are white, flip them over so the colors alternate nicely.

Step 3: Take the top section of paper and fold it over, keeping the top edge 1 inch away from the next layer. Make sure the layers are all even before you crease the fold.
Step 4: The card should now look like a neat set of steps. If you need to, use paper clips to secure the top and hold everything in place.

Step 5: Open up your card so the inside is facing down.
Step 6: Using a hole punch, create a hole on each side of the card right on the crease. Be careful not to punch too close to the edge, or your book won’t stay together.

Step 7: String each end of your ribbon through the holes on each side.
Step 8: Tie the ribbon pieces together to form a bow. Close up your card and voilà — you have your step card! Now for the fun part: decorating it.
Decorating Your Step Card
My absolute favorite part of this card is the flaps. Each section opens to reveal something more. For my card, I let every layer represent a trait I adore about my spouse.

On the edge of the first flap I printed the words “You are . . .” and then filled each remaining flap with a characteristic I wanted to highlight. You can easily create your own list on a Word document or simply handwrite it.

After attaching each of the traits, I added a photo or keepsake that matched the characteristic. Then, on the upper part of the flap, I wrote my message.

And there you have it — a unique, personal card that’s sure to bring a big smile to your special someone’s face. Looking for more ways to celebrate? Browse our date night and celebration ideas for your next occasion.
Step Card FAQ
What is a step card?
A step card is a folded card made from stacked sheets of paper that create a series of “steps.” Each layer gives you a spot to write a reason you love someone, add a photo, or share a memory — making it a heartfelt, personalized alternative to a store-bought card.
What occasions is a step card good for?
Step cards work for almost any occasion — anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or just because. Simply tailor the traits, photos, and message to the moment.
How long does it take to make?
The card itself comes together in about 15 minutes. Decorating and personalizing it with traits, photos, and messages takes a bit longer, but that’s the part that makes it meaningful.
