Want to give your spouse a gift that feels like it took hours — but actually comes together in about ten minutes? A personalized video slideshow set to “your” song is one of the sweetest, easiest surprises you can make. String together a handful of favorite photos, add music, and you’ve got a keepsake that plays like a professionally produced little movie. Here’s how to pull it off, plus a few free tools that make it genuinely simple.

See It in Action
For my first video I chose some of my favorite pictures from our wedding paired with “our” song. My husband was so impressed — he genuinely thought I’d spent hours on it.
I had so much fun with the first one that I couldn’t stop at just one. For this next video, I used photos from a 1940s-style photo shoot my husband and I modeled for — such a fun memory, and one of those things you never quite know what to do with afterward. A slideshow turned out to be the perfect home for them:
How to Make a Video Slideshow
The tool I originally fell in love with for this is Animoto, and it’s still one of the easiest options out there — if you can make a PowerPoint, you can make an Animoto video. The interface has changed over the years, but the basic flow is the same:
- Create a free account at animoto.com. The free plan lets you make and share videos (they’ll include a small Animoto watermark and export in 720p, which is perfectly fine for a heartfelt little gift). Paid plans remove the watermark and add higher resolution if you want to upgrade later.
- Pick a template or style. Browse the romantic and celebration themes for something that fits the mood.
- Upload your photos and video clips straight from your computer or phone.
- Add your song and any text — names, a date, a short message, or lyrics.
- Preview it, then produce and download your video.
- Share it however you like — text it, email it, post it and tag your sweetheart, or play it together on the couch. Mine made my husband’s whole day.
Other Free Ways to Make a Slideshow
Animoto isn’t the only easy option anymore. Depending on what you already use, one of these might be even quicker:
- Canva — a free slideshow maker with tons of templates, built-in music, and drag-and-drop editing right in your browser.
- Google Photos — if your pictures are already backed up, it can auto-create a “Movie” from your photos, or you can build one yourself and set it to music in a couple of taps.
- Apple Photos (iPhone) — the Memories feature turns a batch of photos into a music video automatically, and you can swap the song and photos to personalize it.
Any of these can have a finished slideshow in your hands in well under ten minutes. The magic isn’t the tool — it’s the photos and the song you choose.

Video Slideshow FAQ
How long should the slideshow be?
For a sweet “I love you” surprise, 30 seconds to a couple of minutes is just right. Short and heartfelt beats long and rambling — pick your very best photos and one meaningful song.
What songs work best?
“Your” song is always a winner — whatever played at your wedding, on your first dance, or during an important moment. If you’re stuck, choose something upbeat and warm that matches the photos you’re using.
Do I need any video editing experience?
Not at all. Tools like Animoto, Canva, Google Photos, and Apple Photos are built for beginners — you upload photos, pick a song, and the tool handles the transitions and timing for you.
