Jack-o’-Lantern Pizza Date Night: A Spooky Homemade Halloween Pizza for Two

Kate, and her husband, Ryan, made the cutest jack-o’-lantern pizza for date night this week. Homemade dough. A hand-cut pepperoni face. Before it went in the oven, it looked like it belonged on a magazine cover.

When it came out, the face had mostly melted into the cheese, and you had to squint a little to find it. But hey, that just makes it spookier, right? 😂 Did it turn out exactly how they planned? No. Was it still delicious? Absolutely, yes.

Turn on your sound and watch Kate and Ryan make their jack-o’-lantern pizza below, then keep reading for the recipe, a free date night invitation, tips to keep the face from melting away, and five more spooky pizza ideas.

Why a Jack-o’-Lantern Pizza Makes a Great Halloween Date

October gets busy. Between costumes, class parties, and trunk-or-treats, Halloween can easily become all about the kids, with the two of you running logistics in the background.

A pizza date fixes that without asking much of you:

  • It’s inexpensive. Flour, yeast, sauce, cheese, and a bag of pepperoni. That’s most of it.
  • It’s hands-on. Stretching dough and cutting tiny pepperoni triangles side by side is a lot more connecting than ordering takeout and scrolling.
  • It works after bedtime. Make the dough in the afternoon and do the fun part once the kids are asleep, or let them make mini ones first and keep the big one for the two of you.
  • It’s dinner. You have to cook dinner anyway, you might as well turn it into a fun date night with some flirting and kissing too.

Invite Your Spouse with a Free Date Night Invitation

Sure, you could text, “Want to make pizza tonight?” But where’s the fun in that? 😉

We made a free Halloween pizza date invitation to make it feel like a real date. There are two easy ways to use it:

  • Text it. Save the image below to your phone, add the date, time, and location with your photo editor or markup tool, and text it to your spouse.
  • Print it and hide it. Print the invitation, write in your details, and leave it somewhere your spouse will find it: taped to the steering wheel of their car, tucked in their lunch, or on their pillow with a Halloween treat.

There’s something about getting an actual invitation that makes a date feel like… well, a DATE. It tells your spouse, I’m not just looking for something to do tonight. I want to spend it with YOU, BOO!

And it takes about thirty seconds.

What You Need

For one large jack-o’-lantern pizza (or two personal-sized ones if you’re doing the contest below):

For the Homemade Dough

  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F, warm bath temperature)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry or instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 ½ to 3 cups all-purpose flour

For the Toppings

  • About ½ cup pizza sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella (low-moisture works best; more on why below)
  • Pepperoni, ideally the larger sandwich-style slices for cutting the face
  • A small piece of green bell pepper for the stem (optional)
  • A sharp paring knife or kitchen scissors

Short on time? Store-bought dough or a plain frozen cheese pizza works too. You’ll lose the pumpkin shape with a frozen pizza, but you can still build the face right on top.

How to Make a Jack-o’-Lantern Pizza

1. Make the Dough

Stir the yeast and sugar into the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until foamy. Add the olive oil, salt, and 2 ½ cups of flour. Mix, then knead for 5 to 7 minutes, adding flour a little at a time until the dough is smooth and only slightly tacky.

Cover the bowl and let it rise somewhere warm for about an hour, until doubled. This is a great time to pick your movie (see below) or start the contest trash talk.

2. Shape the Pumpkin

Preheat your oven to 475°F (with a pizza stone or steel inside, if you have one).

On a floured surface or parchment, stretch the dough into a circle that’s a little wider than it is tall, like a squat pumpkin. Pinch a small knob of dough at the top center to make the stem, or pull off a small piece and press it on.

Keep the dough fairly even in thickness. Thin spots puff and stretch in the oven, and that’s a big part of why pumpkins come out lopsided. (Ask Kate how she knows.)

3. Sauce and Cheese

Spread a thin layer of sauce, leaving a small border. Add the mozzarella in an even layer. Go a little lighter on the cheese than you normally would, especially in the middle where the face will go.

4. Carve the Face

Here’s the fun part. Use a paring knife or kitchen scissors to cut pepperoni into a jack-o’-lantern face:

  • Eyes and nose: cut whole slices into triangles
  • Mouth: overlap half-moons into a wide grin, then snip out a few square “teeth”
  • Stem: lay a strip of green pepper over the knob of dough at the top

Make every feature bigger and bolder than you think it needs to be. Pepperoni shrinks and curls as it bakes, and cheese bubbles up around it.

5. Bake

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly with a few brown spots. Let it rest for a couple of minutes before slicing so the cheese sets up and the face (hopefully) stays put.

Then take the before-and-after photo. Trust us, you’ll want both.

How to Keep the Face from Melting Away

Kate and Ryan’s pizza looked perfect going in and a little ghostly coming out, which is the most common jack-o’-lantern pizza fail there is. If you’d like yours to look more like a pumpkin and less spooky, a few things help:

  • Use less cheese under the face. Melted cheese spreads and swallows whatever sits on it. A thinner layer in the center keeps the features visible.
  • Pick low-moisture mozzarella. Fresh mozzarella releases water and makes everything slide around.
  • Add the face partway through. Bake the pizza for about 6 minutes, pull it out, place the pepperoni features, then finish baking. They’ll stay crisp and sharp instead of sinking in.
  • Use bigger pieces. Larger pepperoni slices keep their shape better than the mini ones.
  • Keep the dough even. Uneven dough puffs unevenly, and that’s what turns a pumpkin into a potato.

Or skip all of that and lean into it. A melty, wonky jack-o’-lantern is still a jack-o’-lantern. It’s just a scarier one.

Make It a Date: The Carve-Your-Pizza Contest

Want to turn dinner into a real date? Split the dough in half and each make your own personal jack-o’-lantern pizza, without peeking at each other’s design.

When they come out of the oven, award a winner in each category:

  • Spookiest Face
  • Most Creative
  • Tastiest Slice

Agree on the stakes before you start. Loser does the dishes, takes candy bowl duty on Halloween night, or owes a back rub. Your call.

If you love a kitchen competition, our Pizza-Off Date Night has a free scorecard and shopping list you can borrow for a full-blown cook-off.

Witch Finger Pizza Slices

Pizza cut into witch finger pizza slices

A reader favorite from the original version of this post. Bake a rectangular cheese pizza, cut it into long 1-inch strips, then cut pepperoni into quarters and set one at the end of each strip, point facing out, like a fingernail. Creepy, and very easy to eat on the couch.

Mummy Pizza

Pizzas that look like mummies

Skip the shredded cheese. Instead, lay strips of sliced mozzarella or pulled string cheese across the sauce in a crisscross “bandage” pattern, leaving a gap for two olive-slice eyes.

Ghost Pizza

Ghost pizza for Halloween

Use a ghost-shaped cookie cutter on sliced provolone or mozzarella, scatter the ghosts across a sauced pizza, and give each one two little black olive eyes.

Spiderweb Pizza

Spiderweb Pizza for Halloween with an olive spider

After the cheese, pipe rings of thinned ricotta or a white sauce from the center out, then drag a toothpick from the middle to the edge a few times to make a web. Add a sliced olive spider. Olive Spider Pizza

Spiders on pizza for Halloween using olives

Halve a black olive for each spider body and slice another into thin strips for legs. Scatter them across the pizza. It takes about two minutes and looks great on a Halloween party table.

What to Do While It Bakes

Pizza and a spooky movie are a perfect pair. Queue one up before the pizza goes in, so you’re on the couch with a hot slice by the opening credits.

Pick a Night and Preheat the Oven

Perfect pumpkin or melty mess, you’ll end the night with a full stomach, a silly before-and-after photo, and a little Halloween tradition that’s just for the two of you.

Halloween Pizza FAQ

Tap any question to see the answer.

Can I make a jack-o’-lantern pizza with a frozen pizza?

Yes. Use a plain frozen cheese pizza and add the pepperoni face on top before baking, or partway through for crisper features. You won’t get the pumpkin shape, but the face does most of the work.

How do you make a pizza pumpkin-shaped without a special pan?

Stretch the dough into a slightly wide circle and pinch a small knob at the top for the stem. Baking on parchment makes it easy to slide onto a hot stone or sheet pan without losing the shape.

Why did my jack-o’-lantern face disappear in the oven?

Usually it’s too much cheese under the features, or pepperoni pieces that were too small. Melted cheese bubbles up around the pepperoni as it shrinks. Use less cheese in the center, cut bigger features, or add the face halfway through baking.

Can I make the pizza dough ahead of time?

Yes. After the first rise, cover the dough and refrigerate it for up to 2 days. Let it sit on the counter for about 30 minutes before stretching so it’s easier to shape.

Is a Halloween pizza night a good date idea?

It’s one of the easiest at-home Halloween dates around. It costs very little, needs no babysitter, doubles as dinner, and gives you something hands-on and silly to do together. Add a free invitation and a carve-your-pizza contest to make it feel like a real date.
